Ballard Commons Park Needs Your Help!

Ballard, we need your opinion!

Ballard’s Chamber of Commerce has reached a two-year agreement with the Seattle Parks Department to help veer activities in the Ballard Commons Park towards a more positive direction. With the support of a Seattle Parks Department employee who specializes in community park development, the Chamber of Commerce hopes to “activate” the park, and make is a space of which people want to spend time at.

The same agreement the Ballard Chamber of Commerce has reached with the Seattle Parks Department, helped the Cal Anderson Park in Capitol Hill, become one happening park – filled with summertime sun worshipers, families, soccer players, tennis pros, basketball hoopsters, bike polo hipsters and more. Once a reservoir, initially hit a roadblock in its lack of community use. Though the program, Cal Anderson Park saw vast improvements in terms of community involvement, recreational use and appreciation.

In 2006, the Cal Anderson Park Alliance (CAPA) was formed by the Seattle Parks Department, and according to their website the alliance aims to bring, “together citizens and Parks employees who are dedicated to generating creative, innovative activities, programs and events to activate Cal Anderson Park. Our goal is to build on and sustain healthy, safe and varied uses for the park.”

In order to create such a change, the Ballard Chamber of Commerce needs insight and feedback from Ballard locals on what activities they’d like to see offered in the Ballard Commons Park. And so, Executive Director Mike Stewart requests: “We’d like to hear your ideas about the types of events that could be planned for the park. It could be a smaller-scale event, such as a dog walk meet-up, a fitness class and buskers over the lunch hour. Or maybe a larger event like a concert or movie in the park.” Or a giant slip-n-slide on a hot summer day? Maybe some bocce ball? Now that’s what I’m talking about – let’s get the party started!

This next part is super important. If you truly want to see a change happen for the Ballard Commons Park, share your ideas, or better yet – offer to help! Both, would be ideal – but at the very least, unload your ideas here (it’s a survey for the Chamber of Commerce).
